Waimārama Beach safety
Waimārama residents and beach users from the wider community are being asked for their preference from the four options below, on vehicle beach access rules.
This information will be used by councillors to help them with their decision-making. The community input will be considered alongside other information, including from entities such as emergency services, mana whenua, environmental agencies, and Hawke’s Bay Regional Council. This is not a vote.
Submissions close 5pm Friday 10 May.

Last year safety concerns were raised about vehicle use and public safety on the beach following some incidents of dangerous driving. Council engaged with the community to get feedback on how safety could be improved. That feedback enabled the preparation of the four options we are consulting on now.

Council is asking for residents’ as well as the wider community’s preference from four options on future vehicle beach access rules. This has arisen out of concerns that vehicle use on the beach is at times posing a danger to other beach users.
If the decision is made to change the status quo and extend the time or area of the current vehicle ban, a further by-law change consultation will need to be undertaken to formalise the change.
