Proposed Installation of Traffic Calming Measures in Whakatu

Hastings District Council in conjunction with E Tu Whakatu have developed an action plan for the Whakatu community to address public concerns about speeding and high numbers of heavy vehicles travelling through the residential area.

As part of this action plan, council are proposing the installation of eight single-lane chicanes with speed bumps, spread across Railway Road (4); Station Road (1); Ngaruroro Avenue (2); and Buckingham Street (1). Further to this, Buckingham Street would also include the build-out of some traffic islands to narrow the road. The other major treatment included in the proposal is the re-prioritisation of intersections at Railway Road/Anderson Road/Station Road and Station Road/Groome Place.

Council fully support this project and have provided funding to implement the works over the next two years. All going according to plan the first stage of works will begin early next year.

Traffic surveys conducted in 2019 on Railway and Station Roads showed that approximately two- thirds of vehicles entering these roads exceeded the 50km/hr speed limit, with max speeds recorded of 130 and 108km/hr respectively. In addition to high speeds, the area also attracts a large percentage (approx. 15%) of heavy vehicle traffic. Alongside slowing vehicles down, a key driver to this project is to divert trucks away from the residential area.
