Hastings District Council is installing a new Water Treatment Plant on the eastern side of the turning circle at the top of Richmond Road. The positioning of the plant can allow establishment of a recycling facility, if there is community support.
The establishment of a facility will allow residents from the surrounding area to recycle without the need to take it to town.
The facility will use a 20 foot shipping container with multiple internal spaces to collect separated recycling material. It will be based on a similar set up to the Tutira site. The container will be removed and replaced when full – based on other locations this is estimated to be on average every six weeks.
The community will be responsible for monitoring and “owning” the site to ensure it is looked after. HDC will be reactive to any issues and ensure the bin is serviced in a timely manner. If the container is subject to abuse either through contamination (non- recyclable materials) placed in the container or illegal dumping/rubbish placed at the site, this will jeopardise the continuation of the service.
Some of the land that is being used by the water treatment plant and possible recycling container has been gifted to Council by Rayonier Matariki Forests with a condition that a new fence and locked gate is installed to manage access to the forestry track and reduce the risk of rubbish being dumped. Keys will available for users, to be managed by the community.
If the community is supportive of the installation of a recycling facility, this project will be included in the Te Pōhue Community Plan for adoption. After adoption a resource consent will be lodged and once approved, earth works and construction will begin.
