Keirunga Gardens Reserve Management Plan

Keirunga Gardens - The next 10 years

A new 10-year Reserve Management Plan is about to be prepared for Keirunga Gardens and Hastings District Council is calling for input from the community.
The much-loved Keirunga Gardens is a place of many activities – from walking and jogging along the paths under the mature trees and through the picturesque gardens, to playing on the neighbourhood playground and picnicking on the lawns.

One of Keirunga Gardens’ feature attractions is the Keirunga Park Railway, with its ride-on trains and near one kilometre of track. It has been voted one of the top five miniature railways in the world.  The reserve is also home to the historic Keirunga Homestead buildings and The Creative Hub, a gathering space for a vast range of craftspeople and artists, from writers, painters and singers, to miniature modellers and quilters. Keirunga Gardens is also the home of Arthur’s Path gully, where the community has demonstrated the mature oak and gum trees are greatly treasured.  The Keirunga Gardens Care Group is currently overseeing the preparation of a Tree Management Plan that will form part of the Reserve Management Plan.

The Reserve Management Plan process

Reserve Management Plans formalise the use, management, protection and future development of reserves.  The plans are renewed every 10 years and provide Council with a clear framework for the day-to-day management and decision-making for a reserve.  The Keirunga Gardens Reserve Management Plan will build on the last plan, developed in 2009.

The preparation of a Reserve Management Plan involves two phases of community consultation, to ensure the desires of the community are captured.  The initial input will be considered for inclusion in the draft plan which will published for further public feedback and submissions before being finalised and presented to Council for consideration and adoption.

Please take this opportunity to have your say about the issues and opportunities for Keirunga Gardens by filling out this survey.  You are also invited to attend one of the Community Open Days between 11am and 1pm on Saturday 13 June or Sunday 21 June 2020 at Keirunga Park Railway, when Council officers will be available to further discuss issues and opportunities for the reserve.  The wet weather venue will be in The Creative Hub.
