Joint Waste Plan

The way we deal with your waste is under review and we want you to be able to have your say on the approach we take.

Hastings District and Napier City Councils are developing a joint waste management and minimisation plan which will act as our blueprint, as we work towards more effective and efficient waste management.

The WMMP includes the aims of the Central Government’s New Zealand Waste Strategy:

  • Reduce the harmful effects of waste
  • Improve the efficiency of resource use

In addition, both Councils’ waste and recycling contracts are up for renewal in 2013.

What happens with our waste right now?

Take a couple of minutes to see what we currently do with your waste in Hastings.

It’s a balancing act

Looking ahead there are many factors for us to consider. For example we must balance the benefits gained by promoting waste minimisation and the preservation of landfill space, against running a cost-effective landfill operation with affordable gate fees. Our waste management plan will look at this issue as well as a number of other options and initiatives. This includes the potential for larger collection zones and perhaps even organic / green waste collections.

What do we want to achieve?

To provide the community with appropriate facilities/services including kerbside and drop off services which will minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill and encourage more recycling. We want to develop an informed and empowered community who take ownership of their waste.

The future

Things for you to consider include:

  • Should we extend collection areas and target green waste with new initiatives?
  • As landfill tonnages decrease, how do we keep gate charges affordable?
  • We propose to use our waste levy funds to improve existing recycling facilities, provide rural sites and to fund more educational initiatives. Have we got this right?
  • National trends indicate a move to wheelie bins or crates for waste and recycling. Should we do the same?

Feedback on the joint waste plan has now closed. Thank you for taking the time to give us your thoughts.
